Keynote Address at the Harry Hay Centennial Conference Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies, City University of New York September, 29 2012 John D'Emilio John D'Emilio University of Illinois at Chicago [email protected] A pioneer in the field of gay and lesbian studies and the history of sexuality, John D'Emilio is the author or editor of over half a dozen books, including Sexual Politics, Sexual Communities: the Making of a Homosexual Minority in the United States; Intimate Matters: A History of Sexuality in America; and Lost Prophet: The Life and Times of Bayard Rustin. D'Emilio has won Guggenheim and NEH fellowships; was a finalist for the National Book Award; and received the Brudner Prize from Yale for lifetime contributions to gay and lesbian studies. A former co-chair of the board of directors of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, he was founding director of its Policy Institute. Intimate Matters was quoted by Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy in the 2003 Lawrence v. Texas case that declared sodomy statutes unconstitutional. His most recent book is In a New Century: Essays on Queer History, Politics, and Community Life.
