The Andean Soldiers of Christ. Confraternity organization, the Mass of the Sun and regenerative warfare in rural Potosi (18th-20th centuries)

L'auteur s'interroge sur l'efficacité missionnaire du christianisme colonial dans les Andes du Sud et présente l'organisation ethnique du cycle des fêtes catholiques dans une paroisse de la vallée de Macha, San Marcos de Miraflores (province de Charcas, Bolivie). L'évangélisation de cette région a été effectuée par les Franciscains au début du xvne siècle. L'analyse de la fête solaire de Corpus Christi est fondée sur : 1) un texte provenant du Libro Fàbrica local, aujourd'hui perdu, qui donne un récit détaillé de l'organisation des confréries en 1779 (ce texte est inclus dans cet article et a été reconstitué à partir des notes de terrain et des photographies de l'auteur ; 2) sur les descriptions de la même fête observée par l'auteur en 1971 et qui inclut quelques rites non décrits dans la version du xvnie siècle. La comparaison met en évidence que les confréries ont servi non seulement pour apprendre le texte chrétien mais aussi pour interpréter ce texte par un « commentaire » articulé par des rites extra-liturgiques. L'analyse finale du tinku, la bataille rituelle, montre la force d'une configuration proprement andine du christianisme qui aujourd'hui est à nouveau menacée par les réformes liturgiques de l'Église et les efforts modernisants d'une grande partie du clergé catholique comme du clergé protestant
