These data are based on a nationally representative sample of 1,028 currently married Catholic women. From a pool of religious items, seven clearly defined factors or dimensions of religiousness were extracted and related to ideal and actual family-size. The results raise the question whether contraceptive practice and fertility may not be as predictive of religious practice as the reverse hypothesis and suggest a possible reinterpretation of the association between Catholicism and fertility
