Originality is one of the most important criteria of quality that we apply to philosophical work.In the evaluation of research proposals, peer review for publication, tenure, and hiring decisions, we are looking for original contributions to philosophy. But in spite of this, very little has been written on the nature of philosophical originality or how we can distinguish between more and less original philosophy.Somewhat more has been written about originality in other disciplines, mostly natural science and technology, but to some extent also social sciences and the humanities (Barlsius, 2019;Guetzkow et al., 2004).However, most of this literature is not very thorough from a philosophical point of view.As noted by Abdulla Alajami:Even though the majority of research institutions emphasize the originality feature while accepting and evaluating the research projects, there is not an acceptable definition of originality.(Alajami, 2020) The most rigorous and precise discussions on what constitutes originality can be found in legal literature that strives to clarify the requirements for various types of intellectual property. However, these requirements tend to differ much from how originality is conceived in academia, and they cannot be directly transferred to the evaluation of originality in research
