エチオピア南西部のアリの社会に暮らす高齢者の生活を支えている社会関係を記述することを通して,かれらの生活を理解することを試みる。これまで,アフリカ農村における世帯の生計戦略を扱う際に,高齢者の役割について言及したものは少なくないが,高齢者自身に焦点をあててその生活を分析した研究は僅少である。本稿では,社会における高齢者の生計や社会関係を規定する多様な条件をあきらかにした上で,実際に当該社会において生活する高齢者と周囲の人びととの相互関係を記述した。事例に挙げた二人の高齢者は,誰がケアの担い手となり,何処に,誰と住むかについて,社会規範に従って選択をおこなっていた。しかし,老親ケアの規範の範疇外にある者が同居したり,日常的便宜をはかったりするということも観察された。生業活動をおこなう場面や,日常的に世話を必要とされる場面で,協力する人との関係は固定的ではない。高齢者が他者を助ける場合も稀ではない。むしろ,高齢者に限らずこの地に住む人びとの生活は,それぞれの場面で,居合わせた人と助けを必要とする人とのあいだで,その場の状況や会話を通じて「応答的に」生まれた協力関係を利用し営まれている
