21世紀初頭,ウガンダの首都カンパラにおいてエンターテイメント「カリオキkarioki」が開花した。カリオキは,夜間のレストランやバーのステージで,若者たちが音楽を使用して披露するショーである。もともとアメリカ音楽に夢中になった高学歴エリートの大学生たちの楽しみであったパフォーマンスが,数年ののちに盛り場でおこなわれる大衆的な人気をほこるエンターテイメントとして確立した。本論では,このカリオキという一部の若者たちに受容された文化がいかに大衆に共有されるポピュラー・カルチャーとして栄えるようになったのかを明らかにする。まずカリオキのパフォーマンス内容,公演場所や客層について検討し,カリオキの流行を支える時代背景があったことを確認する。次に若者たちの実践を追う。若者たちが学校から盛り場へと公演場所を移すことによって公演がビジネスとして行われるようになり,カリオキが単なる娯楽から現金収入の手段にもなるとともに担い手の若者たちが多様化し,大衆的に人気を誇るカリオキへと変貌していった過程を検討する。最後にこの発展を可能とした技術的環境の変化にも触れる。これにより,大学生以外の若者たちが従事し,また幅広い年齢層や所得階層の人びとを惹きつけるエンターテイメントとなった背景を明らかにする
