In this paper the ideas that informed the collections of central African artefacts assembled by the English missionary, William Burton, and the South African artist, Irma Stern, are compared and discussed. The focus is not on specific pieces but on collecting practice and the attitudes of the collectors. Although Burton and Stern had differing personal visions, it is suggested that both were variants of a stereotype of Africa that was rooted in evolutionist theories current in the nineteenth century. Both Burton and Stern sought self‐realization through their encounters with idealized Others
