The dichotomy between the ideal of a South African literature and the continued separate existence of different literatures in South Africa necessitates analysing the concept “South African literature” somewhat further. This is done by analysing N.P. Van Wyk Louw's ideas on national literature and the establishment of Afrikaans literature in the institutional sphere. Against this background it is argued that a further investigation into the history of different literatures in South Africa would be a more rewarding exercise than premature attempts at establishing a tradition of “South African‐ness”
