This article studies the relationship between dramatic text and performance from the viewpoint of the role played by ostension in both. Two aspects receive special attention in this regard, namely: the aspect of physical representation; and the fictional contract (contrat théâtral) made with the spectator. A short discussion is given of Pieter Fourie's Die Koggalaar (1988) to illustrate the working of ostension in this play
