Countertransference interference is a problem often addressed in psychotherapy supervision. After a brief review of concepts, a case vignette is presented to illustrate the development of a transference-countertransference treatment impasse. The rapid resolution of the impasse via the use of Gestalt techniques in supervision is then described. It is emphasized that effective supervision may involve a combination of both didactic and experiential work in order to resolve the therapist-supervisee's countertransference contribution. Mental imagery techniques can be especially helpful for quickly producing the powerful experiences that result in learning and change. Additional informationNotes on contributorsMichael F.
