Proposes integration of the psychoanalytic concept of working through into transactional analysis. Although many patients receive the help they wish from such processes as attaining social control, the analysis of transactions and games, and the analysis of script, others show improvement by not recovering. Working through is suggested as providing a context within which the patient is enabled to relinquish such feelings as sadness which are associated with the recognition that it is impossible to attain the child-determined aspirations and expectations, e.g., pleasing all of the important parent people in one's life. Examples of the application of the working through process are provided
