Adult ego state functioning is often problematic for individuals with borderline personality disorder. A triad of cognitive distortions typical of the disorder is presented: “I'm a helpless person,” “It's a hostile world,” and “Everything is all or nothing.” In addition, hypothetical clinical examples are provided and implications for therapeutic intervention are discussed.
