Selecting techniques in couples therapy requires gauging resistance and readiness for change in the system. Couples' fantasies and strategic tasks aid in assessment. Most transactional analysis techniques are compliancebased, diversion interventions. Two exceptions are noted. Systemic couples therapy relies more on defiance-based, compressive techniques. Case examples are offered to demonstrate these techniques
