Contracting for Change

Distinguishes between contracts for care and contracts for change. Emphasizes the utility of “survival strategies” for cure-oriented professionals who work with clients limited to a care contract, e.g., clients who are unwilling or are unable to make a change contract. Three levels of change contracts are defined, described, and discussed. Areas of emphasis appropriate to each level are specified, and are considered in determining the general therapeutic approach to be adopted, and the outcome to be intended.
