Describes three behavior patterns, corresponding to the three “not-OK” quadrants of Ernst's OK Corral, which when present in ongoing affectional relationships prove harmful to the relationship. Suggests specific application of escape-hatch theory as appropriate techniques in the confrontation and change of these behavior patterns. The use of this approach in crisis intervention with couples, in relationship enhancement, and in premarital as well as divorce counseling is proposed
