Michaels is a Research Associate in the Department of War Studies at King's College London, where he coordinates an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)-sponsored project headed by Professor Sir Lawrence Freedman titled “Strategic Scripts for the 21st Century.” Earlier, he was a Lecturer with the Air Power Studies Division of the college's Defence Studies Department. Holder of a Ph.D. in War Studies from King's College, he has served as an intelligence officer attached to the United States European Command and the Pentagon's Joint Staff, consulting for the Office of Net Assessment of the Office of the U.S. Secretary of Defense. Dr. Michaels's book, Shock and Flawed: The Discourse Trap From the War on Terror to the Surge, is forthcoming from Palgrave publishing
