Olcott is an Associate at the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy at the Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., where he is a Central Intelligence Agency Officer in Residence. He is a graduate of Stanford University, where he earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in Slavic Languages and Literature. He taught at the University of Virginia in 1975–1976, and Colgate University from 1986 to 1999. From 2000 to 2005, Dr. Olcott served in the CIA's Foreign Broadcast Information Service as a Russia and new media analyst and, since 2005, has been with the DNI's Open Source Center as an analyst and analytic trainer. He is the author, editor, and/or translator of thirteen books
