He has written for a wide variety of publications about the interaction of science and public policy, national security, and Cold War espionage history. The author of Engineering Communism: How Two Americans Spied for Stalin and Founded the Soviet Silicon Valley (New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 2005), he contributed affidavits to successful legal action that resulted in the release of sealed grand jury records involving Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and Morton Sobell. Mr. Usdin also created an online timeline of the Rosenberg case, linked to original source documents, for the Woodrow Wilson Center's Cold War International History Project
