This article examines the ontological foundations of the archive, its multiple functions and structuring presence in documentary film practice through hermeneutic inquiry. The application of hermeneutics in the context of documentary film and practice-based research is predicated upon expanding the hermeneutic application to include the interpretation of audio-visual materials such as archival artifacts. In undertaking this trajectory of inquiry, we can begin to address an endemic problem in documentary film practice where the use of archives is integral to narrative structure and modes of visual address. A hermeneutical theoretical approach toward the delineation of the ontology of the archive in the structuring of documentary narrative is pursued so as to expand the site of knowledge beyond the predominant view that archival inscription in documentary cinema serves merely a utilitarian function in the polysemic field of historical representation. In placing hermeneutics at the center of research-based practice, I seek to show that the handling of archival materials in the construction of documentary narrative entails different forms of hermeneutic operations; and, that these operations (which are interpretive acts) constitute the foundational matrix of the selection and assemblage of archival materials in the construction of documentary narrative and the production of meanings
