Lifelong Learning for Ministry

This study maps the attendance by clergy in Northern Ireland at formal lifelong-learning opportunities and examines factors affecting their decision to attend such training. Data are provided from 171 serving clergy who completed a questionnaire in May 2008 and three focus groups conducted in May and June 2008. These data demonstrate that 10% of clergy are currently undertaking formal academic study and that 53% already hold a qualification above degree level. Overall 87% of clergy attended some form of lifelong-learning activity in the twelve months prior to completion of the questionnaire. Further factors are examined regarding why clergy attend particular lifelong-learning opportunities and why they feel unable to undertake more training. From the findings a possible way forward to encourage more clergy to undertake lifelong learning is discussed
