THE present paper describes and evaluates a measuring instrument designed originally for use in experiments involving decrement of performance in a hypoxic environment. Its successful use in this situation indicates the feasibility of its use in other types of stress conditions; e.g., temperature extremes, noxious gases, high level noise, vibration, etc. Studies of per-formance decrement under stressful environmental conditions have been concerned with deterioration measures of sensory processes, psychomotor skills, and relatively simple mental tasks. There are a very limited number of investigations pertaining to reasoning, judgment, and the so-called higher level mental processes under conditions of environmental stress. This is not a chance situation but is the necessary consequence of the absence of appropriate measuring instruments. McFar-land (6) recognized this situation in reference to hypoxia studies as he stated: &dquo;Precise experiments in regard to such mental functions as judgment and insight are difficult to carry out because of the lack of objective tests.&dquo; The Conceptual Reason-ing Test (CRT), the test described in this paper, was designed to fill this need. A recent article by Ray pointed out the need and the desired characteristics for complex tasks for use in human problem solving research (8). Although the CRT has not been used specifically for this purpose it appears to be applicable to many of the research needs in this area
