On 29 January 1839 Charles Darwin married his cousin Emma Wedgwood. Eleven months later, on 27 December, their first child, William Erasmus (1839-1914), was born. During the next seventeen years Charles and Emma became parents nine times over. Anne Elizabeth (1841-1851) died tragically in her eleventh year. Mary Eleanor lived less than a month in 1842. Henrietta Emma (1843-1927) often seemed about to expire, but married quite happily and spent her childless days as a hypochondriacal recluse. George Howard (1845-1912) surpassed all his siblings in presenting four grandchildren to his widowed mother. Elizabeth (1847-1926) remained single. Francis (1848-1925) was thrice married, twice bereaved, and left two children. Leonard (1850- 1943) married twice and, like William, was without issue. Horace (1851-1928) raised three grandchildren, the most notable of whom still thrives—Lady Nora Barlow. Charles Waring (1856-1858), the last of the Darwin offspring, did not live to perpetuate his father’s name
