It is my pleasant task to pay tribute to Mr Kaye’s services, but the pleasure is mixed with sadness at the imminence of his retirement, after so long a period of devoted application. Mr Kaye came to the Royal Society in 1939 but, since the war intervened, the effective continuity of his activities began with the valuable assistance he gave to the organization of the Empire Scientific Conference, which culminated in his admirable editing of the two volumes which recorded its deliberations. Mr Kaye was appointed Librarian, when Mr H. W. Robinson retired in 1948, a selection for which we have every reason to be grateful. He has occupied the position for nearly a quarter of a century. The ordinary routine duties of a Librarian are, of course, quite arduous and in addition to these Mr Kaye took on the responsibility for those very confidential matters concerning the certificates of candidates for Royal Society, a considerable task even in those days when he took over, for there were nearly 200 candidates a year and now the number has practically doubled
