When we study the lives of successful speakers in history, we tend to focus on their adult years in which their rhetorical accomplishments were at their height and their influence was the most pervasive. This is not unreasonable, for, after all, contemporaries do not write about young unknowns, and posterity is interested in the accomplishments and the mature, crystallized, fleshed out ideas of those who went before. We tend to skim lightly over their younger years when they were stumbling along, beset with all sorts of hesitancies and doubts, plagued with unemployment, indecisive in marriage plans, setting and re-setting their goals, and getting training and experience for the ‘real life’ which lay in the future. When they finally get stabilized in life and begin to ‘do’ things, then we pick up their story in earnest and in detail
