A very great deal has been written about Isaac Newton by scholars of the history of science. I cannot compete with them ; I am no scientist or mathematician. But they do not share my one advantage; I lived for ten years in the Lincolnshire village where Newton was born in 1642. Information drawn from village records tells us something about his mother’s family, about which we have heretofore been almost totally ignorant, and it expands and somewhat alters our view o f the influences that helped to shape Newton as he grew up
