The themes explored by current-day historians have, as a rule, deep roots in the historiography, and these themes continue to be influenced by these older historiographical traditions. This article explores the often contradictory assessments by historians of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries of the principal state institution of Muscovy in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: the Boyar Duma. The study of the Duma gave rise to numerous academic disputes, the echoes of which are still perceptible in historical studies of the Duma in the twentieth century and today. The historiography of the Boyar Duma thus demonstrates the ways that the worldviews and political opinions of historians can influence the formation of their historical conception of the Duma and, more generally, of Russian history overall
