This survey delves into contemporary representations of single motherhood in the children’s illustrated magazine, Murzilka , spanning from 2000 to 2021. Chosen for its continuous presence in the world, adaptability to current trends, diverse content, and the synergy of visual and textual elements, Murzilka offers insights into the evolving perceptions of single motherhood in modern Russia. The analysis encompasses 38 stories and 17 illustrations published in the magazine during 2000–2021. The study interprets the rhetorical and visual tools employed to depict single mothers within Murzilka . The apparent diversity of these portrayals emerges from three distinct cultural frameworks, giving rise to narrative tension. The underdeveloped visual language of post-Soviet motherhood and the largely uncritical depictions of single mother family life, with minimal alterations, underscore the enduring influence of the Soviet past in the contemporary era
