The central issue regarding the artificial heart is whether its\nutilization should be directed by a small group of medical investigators and\ntheir entrepreneurial backers, or by representatives of the society that has\ndeveloped the technology and will have to live with its consequences. Preston\nquestions the claims of the Humana hospital team that the artificial heart is\na needed technology and that the present model is of therapeutic benefit. \nContending that the artificial heart program is currently being fueled by a\ncorporate marketing strategy rather than a research goal, he calls for public\nassessment--under the purview of an impartial commission--of the technologic\nvalue of the artificial heart and the priority it should be assigned in\nallocating financial resources.
