A law professor examines the legal, psychological, social, and\nethical issues that arise in surrogate mothering and the problems that this\nprocedure may create for the biological and adoptive parents, the child, and\nthe state. Robertson considers the central issue of this and other\n"collaborative reproduction" methods to be the extent and nature of third\nparty involvement rather than the deliberate separation of biologic and social\nparentage. He believes that the state's power to regulate surrogate\narrangements may be limited by a couple's constitutional right to make\nprocreative decisions. An insert on page 31 of Robertson's article summarizes\nthe guidelines on "Ethical Issues in Surrogate Motherhood" issued in May 1983\nby the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
