Authors, reviewers, and editors have critical responsibilities to\nensure the validity and utility of published biomedical research...The peer\nreview system I have described has come under criticism recently for being\nsubjective, susceptible to error and bias, and ineffective at screening out\nfraud. These complaints are to a degree true, although beside the point. No\ndoubt efforts at improvement should be made, but the basic system enjoys wide\nacceptance simply because no one has ever come up with anything better. \nInfallibility is not to be expected, but so long as author, reviewer, and\neditor conscientiously do their best the results will usually be\nacceptable
