Resumo

The inspection of the skeletal remains of over 1000 individuals recovered largely from Southwestern archaeological excavations has revealed 16 cases of premature craniosynostosis. Recent research indicates that this condition results extrinsically from a primary malformation of the cranial base. The premature closure of one or another of the sutural areas is a specific symptom of this malformation.
