The role of Adaptive Rules as the mechanism of change which preserves communicability between generations is explored. These are ad hoc rules proposed by Andersen (1973) which operate on the output of incorrectly abduced rules to disguise innovations which do not match what community norms dictate. Other related processes which operate synchronically are short- and long-term accommodation. The operation of Adaptive Rules thus accounts for the fact that language change is not dysfunctional because the only changes which go uncorrected are those which are so minor that they are not noticed during the period of testing or those whose presence is disguised by Adaptive Rules.
