In 1448 a tenant revolt broke out in the northern part of Fujian under the leadership of Deng Maoqi. At first directed against economic pressure the rebellion spread out fast, more and more parts of Fujian got involved and bordering regions were also affected. Under these circumstances and because of the fact that the local armed forces were unable to fight the rebels, the government decided to dispatch an army led by members of the military nobility and supervised by officials and eunuchs. But apart from the extent of the rebellion and the difficulties to put it down there are some aspects which give profound reason to reconsider the Deng Maoqi rebellion against the background of historical change during the Zhengtong era. The events in Fujian are not only a reflection of different phenomena of that change but also an inherent part of the whole historical process. This study has two intentions. First, to provide an overview of the origin, development and effects of the rebellion in order to complete existing historical knowledge about the revolt of Deng Maoqi. The second purpose of this examination is to consider the relationship between the microhistorical events in Fujian and the macrohistorical change during the Zhengtong era
