This article examines the significance of historical writing in dealing with the transience and disharmony of the Shiliuguo (Sixteen States Period, 304–438) in northern China during the Period of Division (4th–6th c.). It focuses on the meaning and form of the historiography with which historians reacted to the regimes’ short-lived natures. The article also deals with the narratives about these Sixteen States regimes. Through their attitudes towards practices of prediction and a close examination of their last wills, it analyzes what insights they provide into the monarchs’ reflections and responses to the ephemerality of many of their states. Beyond their function as an articulation of their political legacy, the last wills of rulers shed some light on their personal attitudes towards death
