Pickford Street has been chosen as an area of study to illustrate the architectural development and occupancy of the textile mills in Macclesfield. Nine mills once stood along Pickford Street with building dates ranging from 1783 to 1908. Detailed examination of these sites has shown both close parallels and differences between Pickford Street and Macclesfield as a whole. The article was written towards the end of a survey carried out for the Macclesfield Silk Heritage Museum between 1983 and 1986. In1986 the authors extended the survey to cover the region of East Cheshire; the majority of sites in Cheshire having been related to the silk industry. The East Cheshire Textile Mill Survey is now a Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments for England joint project, and publication of the results of the Macclesfield and East Cheshire surveys is planned.
