This paper describes the excavation of a rare wooden waggonway complex associated with Bersham ironworks, near Wrexham, Clwyd. In all approximately 40 metres of track was excavated, including a points system. Because of in situ carbonisation approximately 35% of the original wood survived. Details of construction are discussed, together with evidence indicating its likely construction in the third quarter of the eighteenth century. An appendix by Jane Henderson describes the methods used to lift part of the tracks for eventual display.
