This paper comprises five main sections. The introduction traces the gradually increasing commitment to industrial subjects in the first 70 years of the Royal Commission's existence i.e. up to 1978, a year which was to prove something of a watershed. The second section reviews developments since that date; the third section outlines the 1986 situation while the fourth section, as a separate essay, deals with the computerisation of the Royal Commission's archives and discusses the problems and potential of such an exercise. The final part outlines possible responses to the problem of recording industrial sites in the face of an accelerating rate of destruction.
