The railway village at Swindon and the Great Western Museum which stands within it could vividly portray the characteristics of the 'railway town', a particular type of community which grew up in the 1840s and '50s. Although the railway museum showed much promise when it was established in the early 1960s, it is argued that it is now failing to fulfil its potential.
