Much has been written on the German economy during the Second World War; several works deal with rearmament and the armaments industry, some with the question of Jews and foreign labour and others with foreign policy. In addition, various memoirs have been published. Considered as a whole the literature seems to be rather disparate, and one main reason for this is the disparate nature of the German documentary sources themselves. Among them, however, is one central file which has not received proper attention, viz. the documents of 'Zentrale Planung'. This source provides a unique possibility of examining the connections between the different sectors of the German war economy and the relationship between the leaders responsible for it.
