The last days of viable sailing-vessels, up to the 1870s, were a time of prosperity for Finnish shipping. The total tonnage grew considerably, at an average rate of 4-5 per cent per year, and the traffic carried grew still faster.1 During this period, Finland developed into a minor maritime power, and although its tonnage in actual figures could not rival that of Sweden, Germany or the Netherlands — not to speak of Great Britain, France or Norway — it could in relative terms, when compared with total population, outrate all but Great Britain and Norway. In size and quality Finnish ships were first-class, and the general economic importance of shipping was not far behind that of manufacturing industry
