En el abundante panorama de publicaciones dedicadas, por un lado, al estudio de la identidad nacional en Hispanoamérica y, por el otro, al papel del intelectual como actor social y cultural, acaba de aparecer un nuevo libro cuyo subtítulo, Intellectuals and the Quest for National Identity in Twentieth-Century Spanish America (Los intelectuales y la búsqueda de la identidad nacional en la Hispanoamérica del siglo veinte), liga ambos ámbitos académicos y refleja claramente tanto el tema abordado como la importancia atribuida por la autora al papel del intelectual en la construcción de la identidad nacional. Por otra parte, el título, In the Shadow of the State (Bajo la sombra del Estado), nos da muestra inmediata de los límites impuestos por el poder político a esta actividad creadora y crítica
