This essay is an experimental and collaborative text that explores, challenges, and stretches the familiar categories of reader and writer, writer and collaborator, collaborator and individual self. Presented as a textual conversation between two authors, it suggests that multiple modes of address are necessary for contemporary art writing to belie the essentialism inherent in traditional modes of art criticism. Taking as its initial provocation American art theorist Brian Dillion’s exploration of writing and the inner life of a writer who write[s] while writing, we pursue a process of conversational co-authoring, probing the boundaries and limitations of a collaborative text, and, in particular, how a multiplication of voices implicates, contests, and invents an ethics of art writing. Through a collaborative practice of writing across hemispheres, the essay advocates a metacritical approach to both art and art writing via a series of digressive strategies, conversational tangents, and critical narratives
