The following text is a posthumous publication of one of the final public speeches by RAS Academician Mikhail Konstantinovich Gorshkov (December 29, 1950 – November 24, 2025), who passed away in November of this year. The report was delivered on June 23, 2025, at the plenary session titled "A Time of Change in Russia and the World" of the 1st St. Petersburg Sociological Forum. The Forum served as a major international platform for discussions on the key issues of modern social science. In his address M.K. Gorshkov – Scientific Director of the Federal Center of Theoretical and Applied Sociology (FCTAS RAS) and Director of the Institute of Sociology of the FCTAS RAS – outlined the primary challenges facing the sociological discipline. Among its priorities he highlighted the urgent need for Russian sociology to define its own identity within the complex and contradictory social landscape at both global and national levels
