When we began our studies of the dynamics of group interests in civil society, we tried to determine what these would look like after the disintegration of the former social structure. Which groups, differing not in terms of formal attributes but in their actual positions in a society undergoing transformation, would emerge from its decomposition? Finally—and this is most important—what brings people together in such groups, and what are the basic criteria of stratification in present-day Russian society? To answer these questions was one task of a study conducted from 1992 to 1997 by scholars at the Russian Independent Institute of Social and National Problems (RNISiNP).1
