The surveys that VTsIOM [the Russian Center for Public Opinion Research] has conducted every five years since 1989 as part of the Soviet Man Program, like the center's other surveys, provide scholars with huge amounts of material to consider. Among this abundance of material, a special place is held by findings that indicate what fundamental changes have taken place in the last decade in the behavior, habits, and the very nature of Soviet Everyman; what has remained unchanged; and where there have been mutations of stereotypes that became deeply rooted in the Soviet period. The article by Iurii Levada that we here present to our readers touches on only a few traits of "post-Soviet man," but we think they are very important.1
