Studies of social stratification and mobility long ago became a traditional and theoretically, methodologically, and empirically grounded branch of sociological knowledge. The nature and scale of mobility serve as the basis of individuals' evaluations of the social order in which they live. Movement in a hierarchically organized social space of status and groups is an important indicator of equal social opportunity, of class or group solidarity, and of a decline in the threat of social dissatisfaction and conflicts caused by the inaccessibility of high-status positions. Data on social mobility are often used as evidence of a society's openness, meaning that positions at all levels are assigned on the basis of a person's merits and achievements, not his social origin and other prescribed characteristics
