Data from mass surveys of the Russian population over the past two decades show that opinions on a variety of issues regarding Russian society and the quality of life of its members are complex. They also show that levels of tolerance of the current situation vary greatly between groups, and that the major fault lines in opinion lie in the areas of income, regional location, and age. Changes in expectations are resulting in less satisfaction with the status quo among people in the largest cities, and there is greater support for the use of activism as a means to bring about change. Overall, levels of support for a move to a more genuine democracy, to more social protection for individuals, and to a stricter adherence to "morality," are increasingly high
