The history of socialist thought has included quite a few upsets and sharp turns. Repeatedly, after successive failures, socialist values have been proclaimed dead, obsolete, even criminal. Numerous teams of gravediggers of socialism have with their combined efforts hammered the nails into its coffin, buried it a little more deeply, tried to drive a sharpened stake into its heart, and performed other rituals. But time passes, external circumstances change, and socialist values, in their former guise or in a new one, rise again like the phoenix from the ashes
