This is a survey of self-immolation of women in Tajik society and an analysis of its causes, comparing and contrasting data from the periods of perestroika, the civil war, and the post-reform era in Tajikistan. The causes of this form of attempted suicide include the low status of women, lack of women's rights, and extreme socioeconomic and religious pressures
