r HE LAG OF SOCIOLOGICAL RESEARCH and theory behind popular concerns and public opinion is nowhere more vividly illustrated than in research involving Negroes in the United States. The United States Census provides a conspicuous example. Serious and long-standing underenumeration of Negroes, recognized in the 1950's, was not tackled systematically as a research problem until the past few years.l It is not surprising that the research lag is even greater in more controversial and less tangible areas, such as the interracial sentiments of Negroes. When this study of interracial attitudes was begun in the spring of 1966, the viewpoints of members of minority groups had been insufficiently recognized and little studied
